Indians looking for a closer: Could the Astros send Valverde and Wigginton to Cleveland?

MLBTradeRumors is reporting that word on the street is the Indians have added a closer to their Christmas list.  They apparently have contacted Fuentes', Hoffman's, and K-Rod's agents, but one has to imagine that they'd like to avoid the kind of spending those guys will command.

Given their previously rumored interest in Wigginton and our desire to free up payroll by dealing Valverde and/or Wigginton, it seems like there is a natural fit for a pretty big deal here.  A package of those two could command quite a haul.  It would jump start  our rebuilding process and totally reinvigorate our farm system.  I imagine we could at least get one MLB ready starter, plus a handful of legitimate prospects.

Thoughts? Comments? Reactions? Suggested players to target? Any desire to rebuild?

If I was doing it, I would probably try to pick up...

prospects to package in a deal for Peavy. But that assumes McLane would be agreeable to Peavy’s salary. I have a hard time matching up the Astros with the Indians’ ML roster. Some people have suggested Shoppach, but I would say “no” to that, based on the Fangraphs analysis I linked in a previous article. Marte might be a return piece to play 3d base. But his stock has fallen awfully low, and I’m not sure he is worth much. I think it is a long shot that Marte will achieve anything close to earlier prospect potential. So, if I’m on the Astros’ end, I probably don’t view him more than a throw in to the trade. The Indians have plenty of decent outfielders, but who can play CF (obviously, they won’t trade Sizemore)? If the Astros ended up trading Pence to the Padres, the Indians do have some young guys who can play corner OF.

Aaron Laffey Adam Miller Scott Lewis

One of those three would be the centerpiece. Then add David Huff or Chuck Lofgren a LHP who’s stock is down, but still has talent, then maybe Trevor Crowe, or Wes Hodges/Beau Mills (maybe). My ideal package would be Laffey, Huff, and Nick Weglarz.

Yes he is but, if Houston took him in the Rule V they would have to keep him on their major league roster all season, and that won't happen.

If they trade for him, they can get him, and do what they want with him. I like the rest of the pitchers on the list better.

true. presumably he should be available in trade a low cost.

maybe the astros should think about swapping a minor leaguer for him. if the indians don’t take it, he is likely to be lost in the Rule 5.
