Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

"If the Astros want to walk the walk as well as talk the talk where contention's concerned, deficit spending should be the order of the day. Assuming that McLane's still liquid, for this team as with few others a big package thrown towards Derek Lowe or A.J. Burnett makes sense, and signing a veteran center fielder like Jim Edmonds or Mark Kotsay makes sense. Then sign Josh Bard to hold down catcher, because while he's not a star, he does get on base well enough to be an important part of a fully-functioning offense..."

I really appreciated the call to walk the walk

Instead of just talking the talk.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I don't know,

Bullshit seems to be Drayton’s main language. A world where the Astros actually do something would be a new and frightening reality that I’m not prepared to accept.

edmonds

If we sign Jim Edmonds I would lose my mind. I am all for signing the best players to your team, but have we any self respect?

maybe next season..

the answer to that question, of course, is:

no. we have large cows adorning our foul poles…er…FOWL poles

There are worse things we could do.

The Braves have a cow that does the Tomahawk Chop.

Oh yeah,

and it’s huge, too. Can’t ignore the damn thing. At least when Hunter Pence hits a dinky foul-pole homer, everybody gets free sandwiches. All the Turner Field cow does is an offensive hand gesture.

Lowe

I can’t find where I originally read it, but I found this reference:

FoxSports.com, citing two unnamed executives, reported that agent Scott Boras is seeking a “Barry Zito-type” $18 million-per-year contract for 36-year-old Derek Lowe. Zito signed a seven-year, $126 million deal with the San Francisco Giants in December 2006

Boras blows my mind.

And you know Lowe will get it, too.

You’d think, after 125 years, that teams would begin to realize what volatile, unpredictable investments pitchers are. They break so easily. But, despite all this experience, owners continue to offer massive, multi-year contracts to pitchers. The Yankees are making a huge mistake with Sabathia, and you can rest assured that someone will make a similar mistake with Lowe.
