Astros willing to deal LEE?

According to the Boston Globe we are willing to deal Carlos Lee if he would waive his no trade Clause. Here is the link http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/articles/2008/11/16/reaching_beyond_the_stars/?page=5 I only see us moving him if we get a shot at landing Peavy, but if we do that who would play Lee OF spot ( Adam Dunn?) Tell me what you think I personally dont see it happening unless we get a boat load of talent!!! What teams would be willing to deal for him?

a team

would have to be willing to take on a pretty hefty contract in exchange for a player who should regress in those years remaining in the deal. still though, he is a far above average hitter, and his defensive inadequacies can be compensated for with a good CF and a short porch in left…we know that better than any other team

Okay

The Boston Globe seems to have been growing their reputation of poor sports journalism for a while, and I’m just going to dismiss this as yet another example. Unless I’m missing something that somehow some yokel in Boston has uncovered, I’ve heard nothing about the Astros trying to “dump salary”.

Ed Wade made statements to that effect

But he’s been sending mixed messages for the past two months.

Where is he getting this from?

This is just conjecture. No one has said the Astros want to trade Tejada and Valverde, but this guy states it as fact. All Wade said was that they might have to move a player or two to save some cash. He could have been talking about anyone. The primary target, in my opinion, would be Wigginton. He is set to make several million this year and had a good year last season (towards the end, anyway) that he may not be able to duplicate. It’s a good time to sell high. And we are keeping Erstad and Blum so those guys can both play 3rd base and had decent years too. Tejada would be hard to get rid of this year (because of his average offensive season) and there are a lot of closers on the market right now so Valverde would be hard to move too. In both cases Wade would be selling low. It would be more productive, probably, to keep them both next year and get the draft picks if and when they move on after next season.

He could also be talking about Mark Loretta, who hasn’t been offered arbitration and will likely move on to another team. That will save a couple of million right there.

Also, Wade has stated that the Astros intend to increase payroll this year. He didn’t say how much, so all this could mean is that they will keep most of the players from last year, assuming they would have to give them each a little bit of a raise.

As for Carlos Lee. I’m calling bullshit on that. Drayton is going to trade someone with his own fan club that attends every game and people love to see on tv?

Gotta call you on this one

Not only has Erstad never played third base, he’s left handed, so never WOULD play third base.

I agree though. I see them making less than conserted efforts to bring back Loretta and Brocail, especially since there are draft picks to be had. I could understand maybe dealing Wiggy, but he’s been solid, isn’t THAT expensive, and I believe will still be under control for two more seasons (not sure if Cot’s has updated their service time for 2008 yet). He’d have to bring a solid return and they’d have to have a legit 2009 back-up plan for 3rd base (Blum doesn’t count).

Oops

From reading Justice’s post (and I’ll take his word on this one), it appears Wiggy will be a free agent after next season. That dings his value a little bit, but absent a 3b in waiting (not sure Chris Johnson fits that bill just yet), it’s not like legit alternatives are going to be much cheaper. If selling high with the right deal makes sense, I’d be for it, but I’m not sure it even makes sense as a cost-cutting move unless they’re willing to take a hit in quality at the position.

Oops. My mistake.

I had it in my mind that he played both corner spots in his career for some reason.

Personally, I think it would be smart for the Astros to trade Lee.

He is a good hitter, but his contract is horrible because of its length and size. Lee’s offense will start to decline before the contract is up, and Lee’s defense, which is already iffy, won’t get any better. Right now, his production justifies a high salary. But I think his contract will become a millstone around the Astros’ neck in a couple of years.

But I don’t think a trade has much chance of happening. I doubt that Carlos Lee will waive his no trade clause. He already told Ortiz of the Chronicle that he wouldn’t do it (during last season). And Lee’s contract is so big that I question whether any other teams will take it on. If they are willing to do so, his contract cost will greatly reduce what the Astros can get in return. And I haven’t seen any evidence that McLane would let go of a popular star like Lee.

I think it would be easy to find someone to take Carlos Lee

He’s got a huge contract, but so do a lot of players. And he’s proven to be an A+ hitter year after year. Someone would take him. But I wouldn’t trade him. He’s valuable. He hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down yet.

Have you seen him in LF?

Well, I guess you meant his bat.

A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Sure, his RZR is low...

But so is Manny’s, Pat Burrell’s and Jason Bay’s. Don’t you think these guys are going to get some big contracts? And Lee is better offensively than Bay and Burrell and about equal to Manny. Sure not every team is going to be willing to tak eon those contracts, but I bet several would be clamouring for the chance to take Carlos Lee.

We’ll have to wait until next year to see what Bay gets though.

Carlos Lee

Not many teams can take his contract. Maybe the Red Sox?
