A Peavy Offer
Y don't the astros make some offers with valverde? Valverde is worth more than Lidge was last year...the stros can ship him to get Peavy (Hoffman looks to be gone so they could use a closer)...
Offer: valverde, wandy, sapp, and bogusevic/bourn for peavy (and others)
Then the stros look for a closer...maybe try and get K-Rod or Jenks...they do have some nice youngsters and maybe they can try out paulino to close...or maybe sign hoffman
This is just something i thought of...what do you think?

I don't think the Padres want Valverde.
They are trying to cut payroll, which is why they withdrew their offer to Trevor Hoffman. Valverde would cost them more than the Hoffman offer. Possibly trading Valverde to another team would collect enough prospects to use in a trade for Peavy. But at this point, it doesn’t appear that the Astros are in the mix for Peavy.

I have a hard time seeing this one....
Sapp and Bougey are basically non prospects in the Padres eyes because of the players they have in their system.
Wandy would be interesting, but hes older than most of the pitching to be rumored to SD and is due for a raise with thie being his first arbitration year and Valverde has little value to SD because he is coming into his last arbitration year.
It would be more likely to make separate deals to dump Valverde and Wandy for prospects and use Bogey and Sapp to sweeten those deals.
The problem then is that you have no closer, short another pitcher in the rotation and still have no assurance you are going to get Peavy.
