Are you ready to lose Valverde, Tejada, or Wigginton?
Yes, JJO, I am. I wish the or was an "and" in the title because then we'd just call it massive rebuilding. Then maybe we could stop hanging our hopes on Randy Wolf and Brian Moehler repeating their improbable performances for us to eek out a little success next year and could instead just look for new blood to complement Berkman, Oswalt, and Lee in their final seasons.

Hell yeah!
I really didn’t want to see him with the shitbirds.
I agree with DQ. If Wade can move all three off the team, clearing payroll and gaining QUALITY young blood, then he should probably do it. Valverde will want way too much cash next year, anyways.

i think wigginton is a nice trade piece. he showed decent defensive abilities, and a .830ish OPS number next year doesn’t seem out of the question. cleveland is looking for a third baseman AND a closer, so maybe a package of Valverde and Wiggy for Kelly Shoppach, and some prospects could be in order? i doubt it, given Drayton’s dislike of rebuilding, but given that he doesn’t want payroll to skyrocket, i think the front office may have to do something to trade away valverde. on a non contending club, a big name closer is pretty much worthless, so he needs to go.

I can part with any of our players...
…for the right price.
Valverde: I’d be ready to trade V for any package that fills organizational holes (of which there are many) and is of higher quality than the package we sent to Arizona to get him (Qualls, Burke, Gutierrez). I think he’s been more valuable, by a large degree, than those three guys would have been, had we kept them, and don’t think it’s asking too much to flip him for higher value.
Miggy: Miggy’s going to be a free agent next year (this year, he projected to be Type A), and I think almost everyone expects him to take a paycut wherever he goes. BP says that in 2008, he was worth in the neighborhood of 6 runs above a replacement player, placing higher than Carlos, but lower than Pence. He’s actually right about the same level as Valverde, when it comes to WARP scores. His salary is a big factor in tradeability. I’d rather see the Astros eat a good portion of his salary in a trade to get better players, but I’m unsure of the bounty we would get in return. I’m not sure we could trade him for more than we paid for him. But if Wade could swing a deal that was for a small number of quality players (as opposed to 4 or 5 guys of lower quality), I might be happy. I assume that his replacement would be some kind of committee of utility guys.
Wiggy: Like Tejada, Ty is a free agent at the end of next season (man, think of how much salary we’d be shedding). This season, he’s projected to be a Type B free agent. Like clack, I think he’s a nice trading piece for a deal with the Indians. My only concern is that I’m not sure who his replacement would be. Chris Johnson is doing pretty well, offensively, in the AFL, but from what I understand, that doesn’t translate directly to Major League numbers, and I imagine he’ll need at least a few more months in Round Rock looking at better pitching and trying to cut back on his errors. Utility types could probably do an adequate job defensively, but we’d definitely miss Wiggy’s bat if we traded him.

All good points
But I think I’m beginning to wake up and see that we’re screwed if all we do is freeze the roster for next year. That didn’t work in 2006 and we were actually good in 2005. So I think I’m about to get into FIRE SALE REBUILDING mode.
The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Hmm
Miggy: Let him stay and take the Type A picks? Unless we do get offered good value for him.
Valverde: I agree with trying to fill holes: it might end up being either two mid-to-good level prospects or a single high-ceiling prospect.
Wiggy: Selling high seems good for us, I think we can manage for a year with a stopgap team at third (uh…Castillo, Blum, Newhan?). Just one: after that, our current guys seem a little old and hopefully Chris Johnson can be getting there.
