Not good for someone who may lose his job over the winter.
Of course, that could be why he’s so drunk and pissy.

"Backe struggled with officers. In the report, one officer said he hit Backe twice in the face before handcuffing him. "
Well, it’s not too hard to hit Backe. Just wait for the hanging curve or misplaced fastball.

Ooh burn.. nice one Lad
Byrd says his friend Backe didn’t do anything to justify what happened. “His hands were up and he was moving backwards. He was shifted forward by the moving of the crowd,” he said. “There was a lack of organization by the Galveston Police Department. It resulted in him being arrested for doing absolutely nothing wrong.”

Backe the hero??
This paragraph in the Sporting News comment section from an eyewitness:
As far as Backe’s involvement, I can only say that I witnessed a public figure sacrifice himself to the mercy of Galveston Police Department’s chaotic reaction in defense of young man. No person deserves to be beaten to death and I truly believe if the persons arrested had not intervened, the officers involved may have taken the altercation to that level. Backe truly sacrificed himself to save this boy.

So...
Was he knocked into the cops by the crowd behind him, or did he dive into the fracas to save a boy?

The Republicans say he saved the boy
The Democrats say he had his hands up and the crowd shoved him into the police.
I cannot wati for the truth to come out one way or the other.
I am troubled by many things in this story.
Starting with how many police arrived to stop ths open container by the pool. Why were the police even concerned with this considering there must be higher priorities in Galvestn now?
Speaking of which, I’m in Alabama and all I hear is how terrible conditons are in Galveston. Why is there a wedding there at all? and how can they ahe a big party in what seems to be a place in great condition?

I recall reading that it was at the San Luis Resort Hotel...
which is more toward the beach and is a very sturdy building (I think a lot of Galveston officials as well as media people stayed there during the hurricane). My sister had long time reservations for a reunion there or one of the other big hotels (I can’t recall which) about two weeks ago, and when they called to check with the hotel, they were told that the hotel was going forward with many events like usual. They canceled their reservation, though.
Some video I have seen of the brawl (doesn’t include Backe in the picture though) makes it appear that the Galveston police were out of control. I realize that may not mean anything. But I’m not jumping to conclusions about Backe.

Is there a link
to the video that you can provide? Curious to see it myself, although I have to say that I’m annoyed at myself for being curious.

astrosdaily forum has some links...
This link to Galveston Community Forum has the accounts of several people who say they were witnesses.
http://community.galveston.com/forums/t/1302.aspx
The accounts are rather disturbing; if even a small percentage of what is said happened, it seems like the police behaved poorly. For instance, the account of a pregnant woman slammed by police against a car while she tried to tell them she was pregnant. Since I was born and raised in the Galveston area, this is particularly concerning to me.
I think this is the YouTube link:

Insight...
Someone had already planned their wedding for this date. They weren’t about to let a hurricane stop them. Such is true love. It was (I imagine) designed to be an uplifting experience. Too bad it didn’t end that way.

Resort owners have bills
bartenders have bills, caterers have bills…
regardless of the conditions, our free market economy demands that life goes on. Galveston isn’t on lock-down anymore, so I’m sure everybody that can is trying to resume business and life as it was before the storm, which includes weddings and pool bars.
I’ve read in some comment sections of some of the websites that are reporting this story with a few people claiming to be eye witnesses that all clamor that it didn’t go down like the police report claims. i’m not rushing to point fingers at the Po-Po’s, but i’m going to reserve judgement on Backe for sure, until more facts come out.
as a side-note, I heard an anectote a couple weeks ago (second-hand, granted) from a national guardsman that was on the scene in galveston after the storm about the GPD officers being a little overzealous in patrolling the island. the comment was “either they need to take the guns away from these officers, or we need to get the hell off this island.” take that with a few grains of salt.

More from the Chronicle
Witnesses described dozens of police storming a shocked and unresisting wedding party, shouting profanity and roughly shoving men and women.
Michael McMillan, 36, of Houston, said he and Backe walked up to see what the commotion was about and saw O’Balle on the ground bleeding, being shocked with a Taser and handcuffed. Police began shouting at them to back up and they complied, he said.
After they backed up as far as they could, McMillan said, officers continued shouting, "and Brandon Backe said, ‘Sir, be cool, we’re backed up as far as we can go.’ "
As soon as Backe spoke, several officers wrestled him to the ground, punching him as he went down, McMillan said.
“A police officer kicks him right in the face,” he said.
Backe never used profanity, insults or resisted the officers, McMillan said.
McMillan said he moved away and began walking down the hill with his wife when an officer ran at him and struck him with an elbow, knocking him to the ground. Several officers piled on and one put a foot in his back, he said.
He was put in a police car with Backe, he said. When they complained about their handcuffs being painfully tight, officers increased the pain by cornering at high speeds and forcing them to slide along the seat, he said. He said officers laughed as they cried out in pain.
Describing the experience, McMillan said, “You will feel the most helpless, humiliated, betrayed, that you will ever feel.”
Chris Cornwell, 26, of Galveston, said police threw him to the ground when he asked them to stop shoving his pregnant wife. An officer put his foot on Cornwell’s head until he stopped talking, he said.
Matt Goodson, 26, of Galveston, said he was taken down next to Cornwell. One of the officers picked up his head and pepper-sprayed him in the face for no reason, he said.

It's awfully detailed
And yeah, maybe my judgment is clouded, but I really don’t think Brandon would pick a fight with the police for no reason.

Brandon Backe sics FBI on Galveston Police
According to ESPN, Brandon Backe’s attorney filed a formal complaint with the FBI asking the FBI tro investigate the Galveston Police actions of the night of Backe’s arrest. It sounded like Backe will sue the Police. IFrom waht we’ve herd unofficly in print FBI willmake the Glaveston plice look bad and Backe and several others will collect big settlements (where the agree not to disclose the amount of the settlement is my guess) .
