Valverde

So how did everyone like Valverde, just want to know... I know a couple of people who didn't enjoy him. They didn't like his antics on the mound, I would like to see what everyone thinks of him. Some keep saying I'd rather have Lidge.

Personally, I would rather not have Lidge, because face it, if we had Lidge, He would be doing the same thing, blowing games, giving up leads etc. Personally I am very happy we found a closer who can close in Houston. Sure he blew 5 games in the beginning but he eventually got it down.

I love the way he pitches as well. This is the way he pitches. He gets up so high. Brings it down , pitches it at 95-100 mph. Blows it by the batters. Every out he goes and crouches in the grass by 1st base. Then the different dances he does when he gets all 3. Love the way he gets pumped. Great closer. Who cares if he is too full of himself. More people need a closer like that.

Valverde is fine

especially if we get the Valverde that finished the season..

I like the 2008 Lidge better than the 2008 Valverde… but if you gave me my pick of Valverde or Lidge… I’d probably take Valverde, just because of the history with Lidge.

I don’t like his antics on the mound… but he was pretty good this year… good enough to stay on the club as the closer.

I like Valverde.

I was excited when the Astros traded for him, because he always been one of my favorite closer ….mostly due to the fact that he pumped up my fantasy teams in previous years :)

Yes, we got worried when he had his problems to start the season, but you can’t argue with his dominance down the stretch. His fastball was so dominant that he almost stopped throwing his unusual splitter, which many regard as one of the better “out” pitches around. His fastball is comparable to Lidge’s in terms of velocity, but it has greater action, particularly compared to Lidge’s rather “straight” fastball. (BTW, Fangraphs indicates that Valverde’s fastball velocity this season was even higher than he exhibited in his Arizona years.) Lidge really cannot choose to sit back and just throw fastballs all the time, while Valverde can. Lidge returned to his 2004-2005 level of dominance this year. I don’t think he would have done that in Houston, but who knows?

I hear some fans talk about trading Valverde while he has great value to several teams with closer problems. However, if the Astros have any pretense of contending next year, I wouldn’t do that. The Astros don’t have a decent replacement for Valverde, and the cost of signing a free agent (like Fuentes) is probably more costly than Valverde next year. However, the Astros will have a big decision to make about Valverde in his free agent year (2010). He likely will become very expensive by then. It would be helpful next year if the Astros could develop a young relief pitcher with closer potential, in order to hedge their bets against losing Valverde to free agency. I wonder if Arias could be developed as a relief pitcher next year? If he could progress to late inning roles, maybe he has some potential as a future closer.

I agree with clack

Getting Valverde was the best move the Astros made prior to this season. Now, if we can get two above average starters during this off-season we will be more than a contender.

By the way, if we could re-sign Erstad, I’d gladly trade Carlos Lee (and his fat contract) for a decent pitcher, assuming Lee’s contract allows that.

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

Trading Lee opens up another hole(and another need)

Carlos Lee was damn good last season… If he produces like he did last season, then I’ll be fine with him and his defensive liabilities. There are few better 3-4 hitters than Berkman/Lee in the bigs… I don’t see a reason to get rid of him… I’m pretty sure he has a no trade clause as well.

Concerning trading Valverde… I’m not trading him either… you need an elite closer… we have one… no reason to open up yet another need for the Astros thee either.

Berkman, Lee, Oswalt, Valverde, and Pence are on my don’t even ask to trade list unless you are going to WAY overpay for them. And I’m pretty sure the 1st 3 have no trade clauses in their contracts, so there’s really no point in even talking about it.

Seems a bit inconsitent to

argue against trading Lee for a decent pitcher. Did you not just write “Pitching is king. Offense is just a high ranking official.” in your post “Is It Bad That I’m This Happy?”

Lee does have a full no-trade clause for two more years and a limited no-trade for the final two years of his contract. That does not rule out, however, the option of his agreeing to a trade. But he will make $18.5 million per year for the next four years, so it’s unlikely that anyone would be interested.

Hey! Don't use what I say against me!!!!!

:)

Yes I did say that, but I’m not trading him for a “decent” pitcher… unless you consider Lincecum a decent pitcher.. then I’m game

I'm With You

If we trade Lee, there better be a money pitcher on the other end of that swap.

A solid #2 or better, I’d say. Otherwise, no deal.

Lincecum would be a good addition. I hear his style was modeled on Oswalt’s.

Lincecum is going nowhere

unless the Giants are the biggest morons in baseball. It would take a rediculous load of talent to pry that guy loose, and with the Giants as far away from contention as they are, it’d take a lot of young, cheap, talent. You just don’t trade away a franchise pitcher at the onset of his career, when he’s locked up for years at WAAAAY below market value. You just tip your hat to their organization being lucky enough to bring a guy like that up through their system and hope that someday you have the same luck.

So basically what you are saying is

expect him to be traded? We know they are morons, look at the Zito contract

Trading Lee

Seriously? Are you serious? I think he is on a no trade clause anyways, but our RBI guy?? Seriously?

"He survived thousands of years of evolution... a mindless eating machine...

…it’s as if God created the devil, and gave him jaws."

I love him. To be honest, his antics drove me up the wall when he was with Arizona, so I certainly understand why people don’t like him. Now that he’s an Astro, I get a big kick out of it. His outward display of emotion gets me pumped up as a fan. The fact that he’s one of the most dominant closers in the game certainly helps as well.

It’d certainly be nice to have the Lidge of ‘04 back, which is apparently what he’s back to now, but after so many years of hoping he’d be his old dominant self and just never pulling it together, I’m fine with moving on and not looking back. It’d be a shame if Bourn never amounts to anything and the Phillies end up with one of the best bargain trades ever.

But as for the question, I’m cool with Valverde, the whole package (especially the results).

Amen

Valverde is a beast.

My 8 year old son

Loves Valverde. I tried to encourage him to Oswalt, but he picked Valverde instead.

I think it was because he kept seeing those 96+ numbers up on the pitching board there down past third base.

And he probably got a kick out of the “mindless eating machine” intro.

Bahaha

Ahh.. I am only 14 myself, I love Valverde, I remember the last game I went to… against the Cards, he threw a 101 MPH pitch for the last pitch of the game, a strike out. It was awesome. If that Gun was right.
