ninth inning of game 1

Former Astros playing a role:

Eric Bruntlett batting for Phillies

Trever Miller struck out Howard

Dan Wheeler pitching to Eric Bruntlett

Cut shots to Brad Lidge warming up in the bullpen

(and though he hasn't done anything yet it the ninth, Ben Zobrist started the game in right field for the Rays  - second time he's played right since little league or something like that)

I liked the Astros connection in the top of the ninth

Lidge

This is exciting. I still have a spot in my heart for him.

Where will you be when the Sixers hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy? Hopefully Liberty Ballers.

Bottom of the ninth with Phillies leading 3-2

Brad Lidge gets massive camera time
One strikey-outey
Two strikey -outey
Carl Crawford batting
Full count
Three strikey-outey
pop out in foul territory
Phillies win 3-2
Save for Lidge

what gets me is

that save for Zobrist they were all here just last year.

Lidge looked fantastic – I was afraid the 6-7 day layoff might make him a little wild …

Man if Rollins and Howard can just get going they have a decent chance at taking the series. The next 3 starters are righties so maybe they’ll do better against them but man they looked terrible. They can’t expect the rest of their starters to keep it 2 runs in 7 innings.

Brad Lidge...

master of the universe?

I Don't Understand

The collective population of NL hitters decides in ‘06/’07 that they’re gonna start taking Lidge’s slider, get ahead and get into a fastball count.

But for ’08, the plan is off.

What’s up with that?

Longoria and Pena each took exactly one pitch. At least Crawford had the right approach before fouling out.

If I’m the Rays hitting coach, I am instructing all my young impressionable hitters to take the first two pitches, and then if they’re ahead, take a third.

Lidge has never stopped having the nasty slider. But two things have also almost always been true. 1) it’s rarely in the zone and 2) you can’t hit it anyway.

So take some pitches people! You f%$&(* &^ did it in ’06 and ’07!

Also, Hypothesis, What Do You Think: Aki Iwamura was able to get the three hits off Hamels, because he’s from Japan, where their more zenlike, less aggressive approach makes them used to and able to hit a changeup.

Kaz Matsui runs hotter than most Japanese players, but does anyone know his numbers vs. Hamels?

Alright, time to deport Bourn.

Maybe something about Lidge's delivery...

in 06/07 allowed hitters to immediately identify the slider vs. the fastball. Like the talk about tipping his pitches in 06…. or perhaps a slight delivery issue which permitted the batter to see the ball better as it came out of his hand (like Ausmus said happened with Oswalt earlier this season). I also think that Lidge was so wild with the fastball in those years that it was easier for hitters to guess when the slider was coming.

Matsui is 1 for 3 against Hamel in his career. That sample doesn’t mean much, but your explanation for Iwamura makes sense. Matsui, and probably other Japanese hitters, differ from American batters because they don’t try to hit a HR ever at bat, and look to go the other way with short swings, kind of like a 2 strike hitting approach on every count. My impression is that baseball used to have more batters who hit like that, but the popularity of the HR changed the interest in that approach.

And thank goodness for that trend.....

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!

And thank goodness for that trend.....

Intelligent, winning baseball is much less less fun than seeing some bozo blast one into the stands when trailing by a bunch of runs. I suspect there is some correlation between beer sales and home runs.

It takes more than pitching to win a pennant, but not much!
