CFB 2.0

I just wanted to give you guys/gals a heads up for an upcoming change to the Crawfishboxes.  In the next month or so, the site will go through a complete revamp and will look totally different.  I can't really give any specifics on the change until it's released, but I will just let you know... it's going to be quite awesome.  I've already seen how it works and it's going to blow you away.

So if you come here some time in the next month or so and feel like you're lost... You're not.

I can't really say much else, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask them... just be warned that there's a good chance I won't be able to answer you until the new release.

Do you have a release date...
or at least a general time frame that is more specific than "a month or so"?

I'm thinking February, but don't quote me.

2008 NL Central - Winter Rankings
A good showing from the Astros in the 2008 NL Central Rankings via my baseball game simulator that takes 2008 ZIPS projections as data input.  Each NL Central team faced each other and played 10,000 games against each other.  Each #1 starter faced the other teams #1 starter 1000 times at home and 1000 times on the road, the same for #2 thru #5 starters.  The Astros came out ranked 4th, but almost within the margin of error for first.  The Reds, Brewers, Cubs and Astros were all bunched near each other at the top, with dropoffs to the Cardinals and Pirates.

The Astros staff matched up as follows:
#1 Starter: Oswalt 4-1
#2 Starter: Williams 2-3
#3 Starter: Rodriguez 3-2
#4 Starter: Backe 1-4
#5 Starter: Sampson 3-2

I guess this just re-enforces the obvious that the Astros have a tough ace, but are rather thin the rest of the way through the rotation.

Definitely
Our rotation is the weakest part of the team in my opinion..  If I had to bet that ofthe 5 listed, how many would win at least 10 games this year...  I'm not sure I could bet with confidence that the number would be greater than 2.

Backe as a #4...
going 1-4 seems way wrong to me.

Who has that good of a #4 starter in the Central?  And what are his ZIPS projections?

Also, if given the over under on starters with 10 or more wins at 2, I'll take the over.  I think the lineup gives them a better shot to win more of those 7-5, 9-8 games.

ZIPS is very pessimistic...
on Backe.  ZIPS projects a 5.02 ERA for Backe next season.  Bill James projects a 4.88 ERA for Backe next season.  Who has a better No. 4?  Probably the Cubs.  Lieber just signed with them and is likely to be a No. 5 starter for them.  He would likely be a No. 2 or 3 on the Astros' starting staff.  Lieber's injury last year was not arm related; his career ballpark neutral ERA is 3.90 and his ballpark neutral ERA each year in Philly was in the low 4's.

Brandon got Backe
Also, keep in mind it's not just Backe straight up vs the other teams #4 starters.  It's Backe+Offense+Bullpen vs other teams #4+Offense+Bullpen (with HFA thrown in).  Backe's ZIPS are not that great, niether are his projections in other systems (as noted in the other post).  Thanks for the reply.

Backe may
Be the best # 4 starter in the majors(I doubt it.. just work with me here)...  But our 2-3's are weak for their spots(well depending on which Wandy we see) and I'm penciling in Sampson as the 5th starter(which I think would make him one of the better 5th starters as well).
