Chris Burke: What To Do?

With Biggio giving his last hurrah, what should happen to Chris Burke for 2008?  Permanent placement at second base?  Trade him?  Platoon?

Burke
is far and away the best middle infielder the Astros have. He should start every game.

Burke
should be given a heavy thermal jacket and a one-way ticket to Siberia.

I Voted Bench
Trade sounds good, but what do you think we'll get for a light hitting second baseman?

Burke's platoon splits are not varied enough to justify a platoon.

I figure we got a couple million dollars invested in the guy, might as well keep him around as a bench player, his defense ain't too bad at all, and he's good for a homer in extra innings every now and then.

I don't think he's got
the attitude for a bench spot.  There's been a few times he's gotten lucky with a hitter's pitch, but I can't remember him being all that effective as a PH (and in the AB as being a PH, I know there's been a few times he's done well after staying in the game an AB or two).

Last off-season...
the team's big puzzle was Ensberg, as in "which Ensberg will we get next year?"  I suspect Burke is destined for that same designation this off-season.

Burke's offense last season seemed consistent with the potential he showed in the minors, and one assumed that his high-.700's OPS would be  trending up toward .800 this season.  Instead, he had a regression.  Maybe this season is just a temporary anomaly, and he will resume his offensive progression.  (Look at the up/down pattern of Biggio's OPS in his first few ML seasons.) Or maybe it is an indication that Burke won't be better than a career utility infielder.  Heck if I know.

I think Burke would be a significant defensive improvement at 2d base, so I would like for him to succeed.  But it seems to me that there is something wrong with his swing right now.  I'm no batting mechanics expert, but he just looks out of synch at the plate.

My preference would be to trade Burke if he would bring value in return.  But I suspect that his current season would cause any trade value to be "selling low."  If that is the case, we might as well roll the dice with him next year. I voted "platoon" because I'm unsure if he will succeed as a starter next year, and I would like to have another starter-quality second baseman available, whether it be Conrad, Loretta, Ransom or someone else.  I agree he is not a great L/R platoon candidate, but I see some reasons why he should share his starter position until we find out what he will produce.

I'd Love
to take a look at Conrad.

He regressed to a .217 average this year at Round Rock, which almost makes it seem ludicrous to even consider him for a spot in the majors, but I don't think 2006--when he hit .267 and slugged .534--was an anomaly.

Prior to the year, certain admittedly biased parties were coming over here and making the point that Conrad was perhaps the most qualified candidate to play second base for the Astros, but I totally understood why Biggio and Burke got the preferential treatment in 2007.

But with Biggio gone and Burke having sucked so very much and Loretta having really fallen off in the second half, and with Conrad having such pop, I really don't see why he should not be given the opportunity to win the job in Spring Training.

The only question (and it's a big one):  will we still have him under our control in 2008?

If Lamb and Loretta...
are no longer on the Astros next year (which some people assume), the Astros definitely will need bench power and a utility infielder.  Round Rock had several utility infielders who can play all infield positions AND hit with surprising power: Ransom, Klassen, Conrad.  Conrad is the only one who is under 30, but his batting average regressed, like you said.  Since all three could conceivably compete for a utility infield position, the Astros might have some difficult decisions regarding the 40 man roster before they are set for the off-season.  Ransom was added to the 40 man (not necessarily permanent, though), and I wonder if Conrad will continue to be protected?  i am guessing that other teams might want Conrad if he isn't. Justice's blog said that other ML teams inquired about trading for Ransom, which indicates that he might be a risk to sign elsewhere.

Admittedly biased comment regarding Conrad ;)
Even with Brooks' regression in average, his actual OBP wasn't that far behind Ransom and Saccomanno and I have trouble seeing how the team wouldn't want to take a September look at him considering his power numbers and the fact that Loretta can't possibly be the answer if the team is serious about rebuilding for the future.

I haven't talked to Brooks lately, and this is just my opinion, but it seems to me that he's destined to be viewed as a AAAA player with the Astros organization and I'd really like to see the team just take Brooks off the 40-man roster and let him try his luck with another team. It seems to me that letting a guy prove himself in the minors and then jump on one statistic from one year as a reason why they can't bring him up is just mean (see Jason Lane).

very surprised
I did not know that there was this bad of a feeling towards Burke. I think he will be a fine ML regular if given the chance. He is on a down year that may be due to a bad "handling" situation I think.

I really don't see where else the Astros would go right now. I will have to see who is available at the end of the year but I really believe he is the best candidate for 2nd next year. He would be a vast improvement over Biggio in the leadoff spot for next year.

And NO ONE should even think about saying Pence is a great leadoff hitter. That would be a waste of talent....... and OPS.

Trade
I voted for trade, finally.  His development has been stunted, it seems he has some value to others, and I think he's too much of a risk and/or dead weight to keep in the lineup when we're already going to be doing battle on multiple fronts to even have a fieldable team next year.

Now, if McLane comes in with the new GM and agrees to a multi-year rebuild period, I could perhaps stand to see him at 2B.

Barring that, however, let's see what we can get in a creative trade package.

Let him start 2nd next year
and when he still sucks the Astros can finally get rid of him and we don't have to worry about this crap anymore.

On the off chance he happens to do well, then great! Win-win for everyone.

Recent Comments on Burke from Coop
From Alyson Footer's article:

"It's been a struggle for him," Cooper said, adding that he may try Burke at shortstop before the year's over. "He's changed his swing a little bit this year to try to do a better job of staying inside some balls instead of hooking balls. I think he needs to figure out what kind of player he is."

Coop is determined to find out
And that's not such a bad thing. Maybe the Astros try to keep Loretta to start if Burke doesn't show them he can do anything in this last month.
