Game Hero, 60 - 74

I like a Berkman homer as much as the next guy, but the only reason we aren't talking about another disheartening loss today is because our number six starter pitched a game worthy of our ace.
Like Oswalt, Albers appears to be on a little roll. Today was the second straight start he's gone 7 complete, and the second straight where he ended up with a 60+ Game Score.
Not wild about the strikeout to walk ratio, but no way to complain with results like these.

And what do you mean by that?
And all that chart above proves is that the team sucks in games decided by one or more runs.

Coop says...
Once again, Lamb is benched in favor of a lesser player. Why trade for Wigginton is the first place? You already have someone that can play third just fine. Should have just signed Lamb in the first place. He wants to be a starter and he's proven he can be a starter, but the higher ups just hand 3rd base over to someone else all year.

Actually
I dunno, it's just a thing about me and this blog: I can't help but make these meaningless tables that impart zero informational value.
I try to stop cold turkey, go to counseling, talk to my pastor, but nothing helps.

Keep doing 'em Rastro
and 3 hits in 10 tries gives you a .300 average; and you do better than that.

Until I read this...
"Tim Purpura's final bone-headed move was trading for a third baseman no better than the one he already had on his roster. Maybe McLane and Tal Smith deserve some blame for the other mistakes, but this one almost certainly was Purpura's.
He could have signed Mike Lamb to a two-year contract for less money than Ty Wigginton is going to make. He wouldn't have surrendered Dan Wheeler. Purpura made some curious decisions during three seasons on the job. None was more curious than this one.
Lamb was summoned to Cecil Cooper's office to be told he wouldn't play much the rest of the season. That is, unless the Astros face a tough right-handed pitcher. Yes, you read that last sentence right.
Cooper has decided to keep Lance Berkman at first base. This is a mistake. He should move him to right field and install Lamb at first permanently the rest of the year. This move would put the best players on the field.
Lamb got some even worse news. He told Brian McTaggart he didn't clear waivers, and therefore can't be traded. So enjoy these final 28 games. And I hope you make a killing in free agency."

Random Responses
- Lance Berkman should play first base every day and not platoon. Superstars aren't utility players. I disagree with Justice on that.
- I agree on Mike Lamb. He look like and reminds me of a Ken Caminiti - not quite as good in the field or at bat, but good enough to win. Astros benefit by having him on the team.
- I felt the same way about Geoff Blum, who Astros traded and kept Morris Ensberg. Blum later beat the Astros with a home run in the World Series and now plays a decent shortstop for the first place San Diego Padres.
- Dan Wheeler for Wigginton was a bad move. A proven reliever like Wheeler should have gotten much more in return. Purpura is rumored not to have let it be known Wheeler was seriously in the market and also did not answer or return phone calls during the trade period. One of many reasons I'm glad Purpura is gone.
- Astrso should have sought a catcher, AA pitcher and/or some other needs. Saltalamacchia for the Braves would have been great, for example. He was one of several players the Braves sent to Texas for Teixiera. Braves needed a closer. Where was Purpura?
- Wigginton has been a pleasant surprise overall. He stabilized the out of control merry-go-round being used for the infield. He's had some timely hits - more than I expected - and his fielding is better than advertised. Now that he's here, give him a chance.
- Finally, I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I translate Cooper's comment to Lamb to "Lamb, you're such a good hitter we must use you against the really good pitchers when hits are at a premium. The rest of the time you ride the bench." In its best light, Cooper must mean Lamb plays first and not third and Berkman moves to right in place of Burke.

If I Were A MInority
And if I were Coop, I'd make some comments about how I was a baseball person and not an example of some precious core demographic.
