Clemens a Yankee

Link

I don't really have a lot to say about it... Basically the Astros offered him the same amount of money(pro-rated 28 gazillion dollars[million]) but only wanted him to pitch 3 months of the season, where Roger wanted to pitch 4 months so he chose the Yankees. Okay maybe I do have a lot to say about it. I think that's a dumb ass excuse and that's all it is, an excuse. He wanted to go back to the Yankees and that's all there is to it.

So there, I've said my abridged piece and I'm done with it.

the only thing that i don't get
is the personal services contract and the fact that he worked out all pre-season and spring training w/ the astros.  I'm not upset that he's gone, and i'm not suprised that he's gone(well maybe a little but not a ton) but what the hell.  So basically he worked out w/ the astros to pitch for the yankees, and then 10 days after he retires his personal services contract w/ the astros starts up.  F that.  If I was the astros I'd cut Koby and tell Roger to move to China.  OK, maybe I wouldn't cut Koby.

Travel Privileges
The linked article contains this sentence:
"The Yankees revealed that Clemens will receive the same travel privileges that he enjoyed with the Astros, allowed the option of skipping certain road trips to attend to various family functions or to pursue his passion of helping young players chase their Major League dreams."

Richard Justice's column in the Houston Chronicle said that the Astros recently told Clemens that the team would no longer afford him special travel privileges, as he had enjoyed in the past with the Astros.

I wonder if that had anything to do with his decision?

My guess is that this outcome became inevitable when Pettitte signed with the Yankees.

If the Astros actually did
take away his traveling privies, then good for them!

If The Astros Actually Did
take away his travel privileges then they weren't serious about getting him.

Thinking further On This
If it's true that the Asros rescinded the clauses in Clemens' contract that allowed him to skip series in which he was not scheduled to pitch, etc., then it would seem to fit an M.O that McLane has previously shown.

He rarely tells you goodbye, he just allows himself to come up short at the negotiating table.  I guess he "fired" Jeff Kent and Alan Ashby, but you can look at the situations with Larry Dierker, Pettitte and now Clemens where it appears he just purposefully decided to come in below market.

I dunno, maybe McLane had tired of Clemens' games, as so many fans had done.  It never bothered me, but I think by the end, I was in the minority on that.

Perhaps McLane at the end figured Clemens was as much a PR liability as he was an asset.

Perceptive observation.
I hadn't thought of it that way.  But with your examples of how Drayton sometimes operates, it makes sense. I do think it is similar to the way Pettitte and Kent were handled.  Subtly send a message to the player that he really isn't wanted that badly, but publicly say you want them back...so that the public anger is directed at the player and not the management.

IIRC there was a long game last year on the road
where Clemens wasn't there, and the announcers were beginning to ask what would happen if they needed Roger and he wasn't there.  That might have affected the Astros decisions with travel privies.

Why'd we only want him for 3 months?
It seems like it would be much better for us if he pitched 4 months, since making the playoffs is gonna be an uphill climb as it is.  Was it because they were worried about his stamina towards the end of the season?

Yes
That is the way it was presented, at any rate.

AL Hitters to Feast
The AL is full of big hitters dancing over Rocket Rogers return. His performance at the All Star Game is the perfect illustration of why he switched to the NL.

The NL hitters didn't have a good book on him. Rest assured, Boston, Baltimore, Toronto all have experienced players queuing up to tee off.

I do feel sorry for the young Devil Rays though, for a while it looked like the Yanks were the only team they were going to beat in the East. Now, maybe Baltimore if they really get hot.
