vs. Mets at Port St. Lucie 12:05 CDT WIN

Wandy Rodriguez takes the hill with rastronomicals and Co. in the stands today.

I hope to bring back good pictures, and news of Wandy's dominance.

But I'll settle for just the good pictures.

[[Update:]] I might have gotten some decent pictures; anyway, I've posted them. Click the thumbnails after the break to open in new window.

Sorry that this is not on point re: Mets-Astros
and I also know that the Biggio pin on the cap thing is old news, but I had this email forwarded to me and it's too good not to pass along:

"If Spiderman had cancer, Selig would let them wear pins on their hats AND put cancer awareness logos on the bases. Maybe the cancer kids should come out with a movie and work out some kind of promotional deal. Until then, they're out of luck."

Such is the state of the business of MLB as we enter the 2007 season.

Wandy gets out of the 1st inning
Got into some trouble with a runner in scoring position.  But he struck out LoDuca and got a nice catch from Burke on a hard hit liner into CF off of Alou's bat.

I will be listening to game on and off, but I'll try to post some notes when I can.

Pelfrey also gets out fhe first inning...
Burke got a hard ground hit and moved to 2d on Bruntlett's grounder to 3d, but Quintero's bid for an infield hit fails on what the announcers say was a good defensive play by the elderly Franco at 1st base.

Wandy with a good 2d inning...
He gave up a hit to Valentin and a semi-intentional walk to get to the pitcher...but he handled the inning well.

Obvious this is a Mets' home game
Crowd gets excited by every swing of a Mets' hitter.
Like the Yankees, the Mets seem to have a lot of fans in Florida.

I am getting terrible cross-talk on KTRH on-line.  Don't know how much more I can listen to this.

2-0 lead for astros
Lamb with a 2 run double.  OP and Loretta scamper home.

by clack on Mar 25, 2007 12:55 PM CDT reply actions

Now 3-0 in 3d
Not sure how Lamb scored...but I think it may have been a WP, looking at the boxscore.

3d inning for Wandy...
2 quick outs. Then he starts nibbling again, and walks LoDuca.  Moises Alou doubles LoDuca to 3d.  Alou has  hit the ball hard against Wandy today.

Bases loaded now...
Typical Wandy problem...he walks another batter.  For the last three batter he has been getting behind and seems to be trying to avoid the strike zone.

by clack on Mar 25, 2007 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

3-2 Mets now in the 3d...
Valentin with a double which Scott couldn't get to.  Wandy is diggng his own hole here.  He got behind 3-1 in the count to Valentin.  Runners on 2d and 3d with 2 outs.

Lastings Millege gets lucky....
with a bobble by Ensberg.  Now tied 3-3.  Bad inning for Wandy.  This is a test for Wandy, can he avoid melting down when things aren't going well?  He seems to be pitching around the 8 hitter to get to the pitcher. Wallace comes out because Wandy seems to have a physical problem (announcers guess blister or something).  Wandy will continue and go after the pitcher.  Pelfrey hits the ball up the middle, but Wandy makes a nice spear of the ball, and gets out of the inning.

Wandy Was In Control
during the entire Milledge at bat.  Once he walked LoDuca, he fell apart, but was definitely back in control after the mound visit thing.  I knew Milledge wasn't getting the ball out of the infield, and he didn't, but the Ensberg error did some more damage.

Wandy kept kicking the mound before during and after the mound visit, and when Rex Jones went out there, I thought it was Wandy's thigh or something . . . .

Astros 4th...
Quintero had a hit, and Jason Lane was in the batter's circle as a PHer for Wandy, with 2 outs.  But Lane went back to the dugout and Wandy hit for himself with a runner on base, which is sort of odd, because Nieve is warming up to come in the game.  Seems like odd strategy, after Wandy flies out to end the inning.  The only thing I can gather is that the Astros want to give Wandy some game practice batting.

Nieve is sharp!
Fernando strikes out Reyes and Wright to start the inning.  Then LoDuca flies out with a well hit ball.

by clack on Mar 25, 2007 1:36 PM CDT reply actions

Nieve
positiively decimated Reyes, who was reduced to swinging meekly in the dirt to complete the K.

Fernando was just this side of dominant.  I wasn't keeping score, but someone nearby called out that 10 straight Mets had been retired at one point.  Some of that may have been Albers, but not much.

I'll pick up what I can
Top 5th:

Palmeiro doubles to left on a ball that perhaps a better LF would've gotten to (Alou is in left for the Mets)

Wild pitch gets him to 3rd, and the wild pitch actually hit the home plate umpire in the hand, so he's in pain

Loretta strikes out

Lamb hits the ball as hard as he can, but apparently the winds blow it back in but it's still deep enough to sac OP home on the play. Lamb does some sorta figure-skating type pissed off jumpkick as he rounds 1st because he thought he had his home run

Bottom 5

Two flyouts and a groundout to first. Nieve is dealing.

Whoops
Ensberg flew out to LF to end the top of the 5th

Scott flies out to center field.

Chris Burke with a solid single over the SS. He's 2 for 3 on the day.

Bruntlett slaps a 1-1 pitch through the hole between Wright and Reyes for his first hit of the day. Men on 1st and 2nd, 1 out.

Munson hits a 2-2 pitch to left and Burke scampers home, Bruntlett to 2nd. Munson having himself an excellent spring, hitting .371, .450 OBP with 6 rbi before that AB.

Nieve bunts Bruntlett and Munson over, two outs.

OP strikes out looking on a debatable inside pitch. Astros up 5-3

Bottom 6th
Milledge flies out to Burke. Burke has looked really comfortable out there, which is good to see. I'm not sure I agree with someone's post yesterday that Bruntlett is our best CF, Burke hasn't really missed a beat.

Just as I write that last line, Bruntlett makes an excellent play at SS to throw out a Mets minor leaguer who can fly down the line. Two outs.

Nieve strikes out Shawn Green up and away with a fastball. Still looking pretty good for Fernando today.

good Lord! I feel so sorry for players
who have to play for the New York teams, Chicago teams, Boston, or Philadelphia. I remember when Beltran was struggling with the Mets, and the fans were so horrible to him- I don't see why any player would want to play for a team with fans like that. Astros fans don't ever boo our players who are struggling. I do remember one game that Lidge faltered in last year there were a few boos that you could hear, but nothing compared to New York or Philadelphia. That has got to be the worst feeling.

Yeah, seriously
They just gave Sosa a sarcastic ovation for throwing a strike to Nieve. That's pretty harsh for a spring-training crowd, no?

by Kian on Mar 25, 2007 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

The Crowd Was Absolutely Brutal on Sosa
The boos were echoing through the stadium as he departed.

Could not believe the depth of it, given the slight detail that it's March.

I took the opportunity to visit the facilities on the way out, and some Mets guy, was going, "in June at Shea, they'd have been throwing batteries . . ." and I was like, that's very nice of you to say.

Top 7th
Guillermo Sosa pitching for the Mets.

Danny Klassen pinch-hitting for Loretta but playing 3B, promptly singles up the middle.

Mike Lamb, having a perfect day at 2 for 2 with a sac fly, also singles up the middle.

Wade Robinson (who?) grounds to 1st. Lamb forced out at 2nd. Runners on the corners, 1 out, Lane pinch-hitting for Luuuuke.

Lane pops to 2B, two outs. Swung at a bad slider and couldn't get the runner in from 3rd, poor form Jason. Burke up.

Robinson steals 2nd.

Burke walks in a good at-bat. Bruntlett up.

Sosa walks in a run. Bruntlett and Burke are having done the exact same thing in their last two at-bats.

Munson bloops one to center to score Robinson and Burke. Bruntlett to 3rd. 8-3 good guys.

Passed ball as Nieve bats, Bruntlett scores, Munson to 2nd. 9-3.

Nieve with a base hit to left field, Munson challenges Alou's arm and wins as Alou's throw home was up the line. Astros 10, Mets 3. Willie Randolph is going to his bullpen.

Brandon Nall, a RH sidearmer, in to pitch. OP at the plate.

OPs grounds up the middle, and the inning goes on.

Klassen smacks one down the RF line, Nieve scores from 2nd and OP gets to 3rd as Lastings Milledge makes an ill-advised throw to try to beat out OP. No such luck, young man.

Lamb up, he grounds out. Inning finally over. All six runs we scored that inning occurred with 2 outs. Astros up, 11-3.

Bottom 7th
Reyes up, 1 pitch, 1 out as he grounds to Robinson at 2B.

Wright pops to Bruntlett, 2 outs.

Defelice pops to LF.

Albers warming up. Apparently the fact that Nieve has a perfect four innings doesn't change Gar's game plan in spring. If Nieve needed to prove any more that he deserves the 5th spot in the rotation, I think he clinched it today. Brian Moehler fans, you must be crushed. Rest of sane Astros universe, have a cigar. I think we have our starting rotation.

My old clunky Dell just had a seizure of sorts, so I'm signing off to go watch basketball.

Competition for Starter Slots....
Nieve obviously puts himself in good position for a starting slot.  This what I had wanted to see: one of the young guys looking dominant and making himself a "no doubter" in the rotation.  Wandy's start was mediocre, at best, but it wasn't so terrible that it is likely to knock him out of the rotation (I am guessing).  Albers had a very good outing.  Before this game, I felt that Albers would likely begin the year at Round Rock. However, if he can have a few more outings like today, he could make a strong case for at least a bullpen position, and perhaps a starting position.
