Tejada trade

ESPN 790 is reporting that a Tejada trade is now likely and the Astros are both optimistic it will happen and satisfied in what they are giving up. They haven't said who they would give up in the deal. They also say it might not even be announced today. The ball is in Baltimore's court (like the last 3 years?).

I don't think they would mention it if they didn't think it was going down.

All I want is to keep Pence. I hope both Bourn and Scott are not in the deal, who plays OF,(will make Stros sign an expensive FA CFer). I hope Wandy is in the deal(I think his value is higher perceptionaly).

I will have more thoughts

MLBTR is saying the principle players would be Everett, Burke and a pitcher. Like I said, I really hope that is Wandy and not Patton. But with the other players being so light on value I would have to think it is Patton.

beat me, shamus!
What happened to Wade's speed and D philosophy?  Wasn't that the purpose of signing Matsui?

You gotta like it from an offensive standpoint, though we will again be extremely RH heavy.  But even as one who doesn't put too much into defense, if Tejeda is at SS, we are in a lot of trouble.

I may be the only one, but I hope it's Patton going to the Os.  I may be opening myself up to ridicule, but I think Wandy will be better long-term.

WOW!
I hope it's true.
How about a lineup of
Bourne
Tejada
Pence
Berkman
Lee
Wiggington
Towles
Matsui

The Astros could win a bunch of 9-7 games that way.

It's the next generation of Astros. Let's see if they can play like the men they are replacing.

You mean lose a bunch of 9-7 games
We still don't have much good pitching. Putting Tejada at SS seems to be counterproductive to what Wade supposedly intends to do with the team. Is he just making random choices now? There have some talks of moving Tejada to third base for other teams. Now THAT would actually be more in line with Wade's philosophy and should greatly increase the infield defense while not giving up any offense. But I heard a Tejada deal was dead in the water a few days ago, so those guys might not know what they are talking about.

I am not picking on you or Everett BUT....
Even if Cecil and Wade talked about Speed and D do you or anyone else really believe that Tejada would not be an upgrade to the Astros and especially over AE?

I hope IF this happens it is reasonable. I don't feel too confidant in Wade so I hope....

According to the PMR ratings...
That were linked to a few weeks ago, Tejada was a worse defensive shortstop than Mark Loretta last year.

Either way Tejada is an upgrade over Everett...
I am not sure about Tejada at third because all indications from his side are that he is not inetrested in a move there and if Everett is involved in the trade then it looks like Tejada with be at short.
Unless they move Matsui to SS leave Burke at 2nd and that is a whole different discussion.

I tuned into 790
when i first read about this and some of their discussion on the topic is unlistenable.  Lopez thinking it's going to be Bourn, Everett, and Burke?  Why would every move they've made correspond nicely with all the speed, defense, and pitching philosophy talk, and this one trades away the speedy, solid defensive centerfielder on top of the speedy, defensive wizard short stop?

i also don't like having to give up any pitching depth, be it Wandy or Patton.  like him or not, Wandy is our second most dependable start going into next year.  his progress has been steady and measurable.  without him, our rotation is a bigger already big question mark.

i don't know, i've never been a fan of the Tejada talks.  his name being so involved in steroid speculation and his trade demands make him seem like somebody i don't want on my team.

we'll see if it happens.

Ted and Jonh
Know almost nothing about baseball in my opinion. Most of what they say about the stros is intolerable. But I have a history of that(my diary: My Frustrations explains that).

I guarantee CP breaks it down well.

This gave me a laugh
to follow  up on all writtne aboe I went to ESPN.com/. At about 12:45 Central time (1:45 Eastern)Jason Stark wrote

"The Orioles' Andy MacPhail left Nashville late Thursday morning. So that makes it official -- the Orioles won't be making any deals here."

Somebody's missed the boat  - could be Stark - could be the ESPN radio guys.

Rumors
Say that its gunna be patton in that deal...i like tejada, had a nice consecutive game streak, im sure he will do well offensivly, we lose a huge defensive player though. The only reason why Everett is at all considerable is because his defense is steller. giving up  few more runs a seaon, i guess is tollerable if tejada gives like ohhhh 100 more runs ahha, its possible if pence and berkman hit well and of corse Tejada. The problem is, i really like Troy Patton, alot more then i liked Paulino, that being said i hope its not either of them or sampson or wandy hahaha  i know it sounds like alot. maybe we could give them someone i dont wanna give up, and roy o is out obviously, maybe woody if they want a death sentance or maybe, albers? or i dont really know, i think that a tejada deal would really help our team out offensivly, and hes pretty quick. and has power so the heart of our order could possibly rival the mets. Reyes Casilito Wright Beltran Delgado Castro, Vs Bourne Tejada, pence berkman lee towles? ours is less proven with pence bourne and towles, but all young players who hopefully could have nice futures here. So what you say fells Tejada or No?

Astros' off-seasons are like...
Groundhog Day.  They eternally chase Tejeda, think they have a deal, and then find out that Baltimore wants more.  I'm not big on acquiring Tejeda unless the Orioles reduce the asking price.  For instance, I wouldn't give up Patton/Paulino and Burke plus Everett (as has been suggested).  I think Tejeda is a huge risk factor.  He obviously is in decline, both in terms of slugging and fielding.  If the decline turns out to be really steep, his offense will be inferior to Lamb or Wigginton, and his offensive value won't be sufficient to offset defensive deficiencies. Many teams question whether he can play shorstop adequately anymore. I understand there is a possibility he could be rejuvenated in the NL, but that is not a certainty.

If the Astros could acquire Tejeda at a reasonable price, my preference would be to play him at 3d base.  I think it is likely that he will represent a marginal improvement over Wigginton offensively and perhaps a significant improvement defensively at 3d base.  Whether that is worth the $26 million remaining on his contract...who knows?

Rosenthal at FoxSports...
reports that no deal between the O's and Astros is imminent, and he says that McPhail would have to be "overwhelmed" by the offer from the Astros to do it.

"possible not probable"
Alyson Footer says someone in the know thinks the trade is possible but not probable. He says the teams are not close.

What do you glean from this?
"Hunter Pence, J.R. Towles, and Felipe Paulino are considered off-limits."

Notice that Troy Patton is not listed.  Does that mean he is the pitcher in the trade talks?

by clack on Dec 6, 2007 6:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hes the only pitcher
that i have heard used in the talks, other then him i couldnt imgaine who else they would want from us. of coarse berkman lee and roy o have full no trde clauses nor do they want to go anywhere. so Patton is the man thats leavin, that would be awesome if we can give the o's this trade

Query effect of steroids
Tejada more than once has been linked to performance enhancing drugs, plus he was with a team  - the Oakland A's - with other players on the team at the time that have been connectd with steroids (and Baltimore has been stained too for that matter) While accused, to date he's escaped positive connections.  The Astros organization (esp Drayton McLane)values character and citizenship and would not want to pay $26 mil to a steroids user I'm sure. The Mitchell Report is on the horizon. Should Astros wait until the report is out, or put some condition in the trade agreement that all bets are off if the Report implicates Tejada (assuming the negotiations get that far)?

Justice's blog
Richard Justice's blog is about the Tejeda trade rumors.
http://blogs.chron.com/sportsjustice/archives/2007/12/everything_you.html

Since I would prefer Tejeda at 3d base (if the Astros acquire him), I think it is interesting that the Astros are considering that possibility.  However, I am concerned about the suggestion that the Orioles would want a bigger package than the one which is rumored.  That sounds like the Orioles might want more prospects than just a pitcher.  Would you do a deal like this if it included Patton and Bourn?  I probably wouldn't.
