Now is the time when I really can't wait for baseball to come back. The Astros finished the offseason early and now is the long wait for ST. I just got my BA Handbook and the Baseball Prospect Book 07 should be here in days.
I have been looking at a bunch of prospect lists lately and the Astros have several pitchers in the top 50 pitchers. Hirsh, Patton, Albers, Barthmaier, and Talbot are on about half of the top 50 pitcher lists I have seen. I realize 2 of them are gone in horrible trades. Another pitcher of interest is Juan Gutierrez. He has 2 pitches(FB/CB) that grade to an 80 on the 20-80 scale. He also throws a CH that could be a 70 at times. What that means? An 80 is a dominant ML pitch and 70 is a great pitch. His problem has been control of his secondary pitches which means he has to throw too many FBs. And he has never eclipsed the 125 IP mark. He has the highest ceiling of the Astros prospects though.
Zobrist update: In the AFL Zobrist put up these numbers .366/469/.515 .984 in 101 ABs as a flippin SS. Admittedly he is 25 but Everett couldn't dream of those numbers!!!!!!! Zobrist has also made the Rays completely give up on once Uber-prospect BJ Upton at SS. That is right, Upton will be a utility IFer instead of Zobrist.
On another note: at http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6392576 Fox ranked MLB GMs
18. Tim Purpura, Astros
On the job since ...November 2004
Playoff appearances: 1
The `Stros have won a pennant under Purpura, but Gerry Hunsicker's fingerprints were all over that team. He's done little to distinguish himself, but he's kept Houston in the competitive fray. Purpura, like Towers, Epstein and Cashman, is skilled at blending statistical and traditional methods of evaluating talent. Long-term, he should become one of the game's best.
Timmy ranked 18 for........ some reason I don't know. I guess if you sign your own players it is like the SAT's when you get 600pts for signing your name. I really don't get the long term projection of him.
The one sad(or I guess sadder) thing is the lack of decent position players the Astros system has. And the horrible 2 draft classes the Stros have had in a row.
I will have more later, but now I am leaving to try to meet Jeffrey Bagwell at Astroline tonight.
