RIP Cory Lidle

I know many people here aren't big fans of the Yankees, but I felt it should be mentioned.

A small plane crashed into a New York City building today, piloted by Cory Lidle, a Yankees pitcher.  He is confirmed dead.  There's no word on whether there was anyone else in the plane, but it is believed that no one else was.

I'm Sure All Us Yankee Haters Agree
that the team Cory Lidle pitched for during his last game on Earth is irrelevant, and are as shocked by Wednesday afternoon's surreal events as those who root for the the team in pinstripes.

I don't want to use the word "tragedy" prematurely, because there's a lot we still don't know.   Not to insinutate anything, but we have no knowledge of Lidle's mental state over the last few days, and we have no knowledge of any defective parts inside this Cirrus SR20 he was flying.

Developments regarding either aspect could very well change the words we use from "tragedy" to a phrase featuring the word "criminal."

But clearly, a life was wasted today, and one truth you will find among the many thumbnail eulogies sure to be given is that events like these force you to realize your true priorities:  that while you may get your jollies from yelling (or writing) things like "Yankees suck," the real world--with much more immediate concerns--is never far away.

RIP indeed.

I'm Sure
no-one is getting their news on this situation from The Crawfish Boxes, but it is now confirmed that there was a passenger in the plane who was also killed, although as I write that person has not been identified.

Also, although I have yet to hear this confirmed, a caller to South Florida's WESF ESPN radio affiliate claimed that he had earlier in the day while on the west coast of Florida heard that Lidle had been flying to Lakeland, Florida, when the crash occurred.

I see that his home was in California, and I am certainly no expert on Cirrus planes, so I have no idea at all what to make of that.

RIP
I lost a friend less than a month ago in a small plane crash. Yall try to not ride in noncomercial airplanes please. They are not as safe.

At least he did what he loved.

Burke will be an All-Star, eventually!

RIP
I think it should be mentioned that Mets 3B coach Manny Acta lived in the building.  He was planning on moving out today (he was planning this before the crash).  He was not at home.

Acta
has Astros roots.  He played infield in the Astros system for five years, and then coached and managed 'Stros affiliates for ten more.  He coached as high as AAA New Orleans in 2000 and 2001, while managing as high as single A Kissimmee in 1999, when the Cobras were Florida State League champions and Acta was FSL Manager of the Year.

If you haven't caught Jayson Stark's story on Acta's view of a cruel and insane day, it's well worth reading.

Olney's story on his last conversation with Lidle was also pretty freaky.
