Astros Options
It's getting to the point where there's little to be done on the offensive front now that Giles is off the market. But, I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing.
To me, McLane needs to focus more on a quality pitcher, because we're going to need another one either to off-set the loss of Clemens or to off-set the lack of experience of the Wandy/Zeke duo. If we get "lucky" and Clemens comes back for one more shot, another quality pitcher would make our fifth starter Brandon Backe, with Wandy as our spot-starter for Clemens' injuries (because you know he'll have them)/lefty in the bullpen. That would, if you can believe it, make our starting rotation even better then 05's. If Clemens doesn't come back, having 2/5's of our rotation bogged down by the Wandy/Zeke duo means that we lose a lot of our pitching force.
Furthermore, I think Purpura needs to stop hanging on so tightly to his minor leaguers. Other then Nieve and Bucholz, there's no one else down there worth seriously holding onto for now. Our team is basically a young team, so unless we're forced to make a fire-sale at some point, I don't see the core of it changing for at least two to three years, perhaps longer then that. Zeke would also make good tradebait for a team looking for moldable young pitching, which I've heard is all the rage this year. Luke Scott is also a good trade item. He's major league ready, but we have no use for him then situational hitting.
A Zeke/Scott/random minor leaguer could pull in something good, perhaps a better backup catcher. I still think Aussie deserves to be first string, but we need a young, decent hitting catcher to take over in a year or two. Perhaps Adam LaRue?
Looking at the core members of our lineup, I don't think there's anywhere we could make a serious change for now, with Bags still on the payroll. If he's expecting to play first, that pushes Berkman out to LF. Willy has proved that he deserve to start in CF on Opening Day, along with Jason Lane at RF. In fact, I think out of all our players, we'll see the most improvement out of Willy this next year. He never really got a chance to be in the minors, so he did the best with what he could and that was his running. Once he learned he could get on base with his feet, he stopped trying to hit the ball and just tried to outrun everything. Once he learns to hit again, I think he'll really explode.
The person I feel who is the most expendable is Everett, but at what cost? I'm not sure there is a quality shortstop out there with a bat so infinitely better that it cancels out his stellar defense. I also think we'll see a little improvement out of him this coming year. He had just come off a bad hand injury and I know from experience that they can mess things up for a long time. Some people never fully recover from them if the bones broke in the wrong places. I'm not sure how much he was hindered by that, if at all, but I still expect a slight improvement. If we had a chance to get Furcal, that might have been something, but we didn't.
Personally, I think the Astros just need to get a good pitcher, resign Ausmus and Palmeiro, and see what happens. The time for McLane to do damage, IMO, is at the trade deadline in July. At that point, everyone will have a better sense of how much this team is going to grow over the offseason and it might be more clear at that point who is expendable and who is not. Also, there might be some better options out there then what we have now.
I don't want to say this a transition year, because I don't think it is. The Astros have a legitimate shot of going as far again. We are however, binded by the fate of a reckless free agent. I want to tell Clemens to stuff it where the sun don't shine, but I don't think that'll happen. I think there comes a point where he is more of a liability then not and he's popular with the fans/media, so I think they'll do everything to keep him here. Free agents are always our downfall.

Tejada
Or if we want to go another route: Qualls, Everett, and Burke.

Lidge is 50/50
I am afraid that this offense is a pat team and the bulpen is the only place to make an improvement.

I think Lidge for Dunn is dumb. I like Dunn, but he strikes out a ton and has a pretty shabby career avg, plus I heard he wants to play for the Astros after he becomes a free agent next year anyway.
A deal that would include Lidge, Everett, and maybe an expendable prospect for Tejada, now I like the sound of that, particularly if we think Bagwell is going to play and Luke Scott will be major league caliber next year. Upgrading our offense through the SS position would be good.
Would like to hang on to Burke, but if Biggio is serious about playing in 2007, maybe Burke has more value now as a trade. Having him waste away on the bench might not be doing us or him any good. Losing him would mean that Bruntlett would be the only middle infield sub though, unless somebody comes up from the minors.
I agree with Saylinara that upgrading our pitching should be about as big or bigger a priority as adding a bat. Presuming that Bagwell will play and Luke Scott will be a solid OF bat is no more tenuous than presuming that Wandy and Zeke are the answer for the back end of our rotation if Roger doesn't come back.

If this is the place
Funny how those Dunn trade rumors don't go away. I'd take him in a second, coz the Astros are a team that have had a problem with OBP, and like most teams, could use more power. Like the now-moot (and much more desirable, to my mind) Giles, Dunn could definitely help in both areas, K's or no.
And yes, I'd do Lidge for Dunn in June, if it were a deal the Reds'd talk about then. I really don't think he's on the market right now, anyway.
Although obviously that could change.
I get bad vibes from Tejada, like I wrote over at the "wrong" place; if you want to upgrade at shortstop (and that IS a good idea) is Garciaparra still a possibility? I'd seen that floated here a bit earlier. Beyond that, Alex Gonzalez and Royce Clayton are available, neither of whom offer anything much more than what Everett does.

Nomar
First of all, we could trade Everett and a minor leaguer for a solid three/four pitcher, which is something the team needs more then a bat.
Nomar could be our main SS, with Bruntlett as the backup on days that Bagwell felt up for playing 1b and Berkman would play LF.
Then on days Bags doesn't feel well enough to cover first, Nomar would take over at LF, Bruntlett at SS, and Berkman back at 1b.
If Nomar were to go on the DL, then Bruntlett could take over as the everyday SS with Lamb playing 1b and Berkman in the LF.
Although, with this lineup, I think the Astros are going to be slightly sorry they parted ways with Vizcaino since we're going to need a third infield utility who can play SS for all this to work. Burke cannot play SS.
Biggio (2b)
Taveras (CF)
Berkman (LF)
Ensberg (3b)
Nomar (SS)/(LF)
Bagwell (1b)/Bruntlett (SS)
Lane (RF)
Ausmus (C)
The Astros still would need to acquire: 1 backup catcher (I love Chamo, but he's just not cutting it, but this is the least crucial), 1 3/4 spot pitcher (Kris Benson, anyone? [and this is a must]), 1 infield utility guy.
Then for 2007, you dump Bagwell, let Berkman take over his rightful position at 1b, and sign FA Adam Dunn. Then, depending on how Nomar performed in 2006, we could go out and find ourselves a SS. If he sparkles, then we go use our extra money to tighten up the starting rotation because in a perfect world.
All of this, however, depends on getting Nomar (we're one of the final four teams). I'm crossing my fingers.

Nomar
I was excited to see the different rumors of who we might get for Lidge. What happened to all the buzz? Is a deal for him not as likely now? Hope not. If we do sign White or Nomar it seems more likely we would trade him for a starting pitcher. Still good. Not that I'm down on Lidge, but he seems like our most tradeable asset and I believe Qualls or Wheeler could fill in O.K.. Not as well as Lidge, but O.K..
